Food That You Shouldn't Miss...

By practising long term diet consisting a large percentage of cancer fighting food, we would certainly be able to keep cancer away from our lives.

Here is a extensive but not exhaustive list of Cancer Fighting Foods I've found on the Internet:

Red grapes: Though they are not nutrient rich they are a virtual treasure chest of cancer fighting carotenoids, phenols, anthocyanidins and quercetin. They contain some beta and alpha carotene as well as lutein, zeaxanthin, caffeic acid, ellagic acid and are a good source of resveratrol.

Watermelon: In addition to containing some beta and alpha carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, this is one of the few food sources of lycopene. It is also very high in potassium.

Sweet Potato: A particularly rich source of beta-carotene (the darker or deeper the color, the more carotene) they are also a good source of Vitamin C and contain natural protease inhibitors, compounds being researched as anti cancer agents.

Spinach: Due to its high oxalic acid content, people prone to kidney stones should eat this vegetable sparingly. Spinach is a good source of fiber, twice that of many vegetables. It is one of the highest sources of lutein and zeaxanthin and is a very good source of beta-carotene.

Swiss Chard: Also high in oxalic acid, so kidney stone formers must be careful and limit foods such as these. It is a good source of beta-carotene and also contains alpha carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. It is also a good source of calcium, iron and potassium.

Carrots: People that eat carrots a few times a week or consume carrot juice on a regular basis have lower rates of lung cancer and may reduce risk of esophageal, throat, mouth, stomach and skin cancers. Carrots are a good source of potassium and carrot fiber may reduce risks of colorectal cancer. Carrots are an excellent source of beta as well as alpha carotene.

Tomato: People that consume a lot of tomatoes or tomato products may be reducing their risk of lung cancer as well as pancreatic, bladder, colorectal and skin cancers. Lycopene of which the tomato is the primary dietary source, is the antioxidant carotenoid, that provides this protection. Lycopene is not destroyed by cooking or by heat, so it is found in tomato sauce, ketchup and tomato juice. It has also been found that compounds found in tomatoes inhibit nitrosimine formation, a leading cause of stomach cancer. New research suggests that lycopene may not only help to prevent prostate cancer, but may help to slow its progression.

Pumpkin: A member of the squash family, pumpkin contains a good amount of beta- carotene and is a very high source of alpha carotene. Adding pumpkin to your diet may help to reduce the risk of lung, stomach and skin cancer.

Onions: A powerhouse of disease fighting compounds such as phenols, sulfur and the bioflavonoid quercetin (yellow and red varieties.) Quercetin may inhibit melanoma and combat squamous cell carcinoma. Onions can also help lower blood pressure, keep blood free of clots and contains anti-inflammatory properties helpful in relieving symptoms of asthma and reducing the severity of the common cold.

Winter Squash: When cooked, winter squash is a good source of beta-carotene and contains smaller amounts of alpha carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin.

Parsley: Though parsley is usually served as a condiment, this tasty vegetable contains beta-carotene as well as lutein and zeaxanthin.

Green peas: In addition to their sweet taste, green peas are a good source of insoluble fiber, contains a small amount of beta and alpha carotene and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin.

Kale: Vitamin K is needed to make proteins that insure proper blood clotting. Kale is a good source of this vitamin. It is also a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables. Eating lots of crucifers have been associated with lower colorectal, breast and lung cancers. Kale is a great source of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. It also contains the calcium equivalent to a glass of milk.

Red Pepper: A good source of lutein and zeaxanthin, it contains small amounts of beta and alpha carotene and some lycopene. Medium red peppers have three times the Vitamin C as oranges.

Romaine Lettuce: A rich source of carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin. It is also high in Vitamin k.

Strawberries: Compounds in strawberries inhibit nitrosimine formation, a potent carcinogen that can lead to stomach cancer. They are a good source of anthocyanins and pectin, which are heart healthy. Strawberries are a good source of ellagic acid. A few servings a week can help reduce risks of cervical, breast, esophageal and skin cancers to name a few.

Pears: The insoluble fiber of a pear is a natural laxative and could help decrease cancerous polyps in the colon. Its pectin content helps lower cholesterol and may be of value in preventing gall bladder problems. They contain some beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, cryptoxanthin and the anti cancer bioflavonoid, quercetin.

Cantaloupe: This fruit is particularly nutrient rich, being one of the richest sources of potassium. Incredibly, they contain adenosine, a chemical used to thin blood in patients that have had heart attacks or angina. They are also one of the best sources of beta and alpha carotene.

Peaches: This fruit is a good source of beta and alpha carotene as well as lutein and zeaxanthin.

Cranberries: Though most often consumed around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, they are effective in blocking certain strains of E. coli, the bacteria that causes urinary tract infections. They also contain beta and alpha carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin and the super cancer fighting phenol, ellagic acid.

Blackberries: A really good source of insoluble fibers, so necessary to the health of the digestive tract. They also contain anthocyanidins, beta-carotene and ellagic acid.

Raspberries: A good source of anthocyanidins for healthier blood vessels and good source of carotenoid nutrition, containing beta and alpha carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and the highest source of ellagic acid known.

Blueberries: Like other anthocyanin rich foods, blueberries may increase visual acuity as we age. They actually help with eyestrain quite a bit. Recent studies show blueberries to be neuroprotective. This is really quite an incredible food. In Europe they have been used in powders and soups as an anti diarrheal and to block the growth of E. coli. Like cranberries, they are also effective in treating urinary tract infections. They are an important source of manganese and contain beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin.

Apples: A good source of the water soluble fiber, pectin, a bacteriostatic compound effective in combating E. coli, staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus faecalis. May help to reduce the risk of colon cancer and lower LDL cholesterol (the bad kind.) A good source of salicylates, a possible chemopreventive for skin cancer as well as quercetin and glucaric acid.

Oranges: This is a powerhouse of phytonutrients. Oranges contain beta and alpha carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin; important bioflavonoids found in the pulp or white of the fruit including hesperin and are a very good source of potassium and the B vitamin, folic acid and glucaric acid.

Tangerines: Tangeretin is a very potent tumor inhibitor and may play a role in preventing skin and breast cancer. In addition to tangeretin, tangerines contain beta- carotene as well.

Red and Pink Grapefruit: A very good source of potassium as well as one of the few dietary sources of lycopene (not nearly as good as tomatoes, but still a source nonetheless.) They also contain beta-carotene and limonene, a flavonoid being researched for its prophylactic role in skin cancer. Grapefruit pectin is an effective cholesterol-lowering agent.

Flaxseed Powder: Ligands are important factors found in fiber. Diets high in ligands are protective against breast cancer. They also help to lower blood cholesterol. Flaxseeds are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, important for heart health, improving mental health, lower triglycerides and in preventing certain cancers including skin cancer.

Dried Apricots: A very rich source of beta- and alpha-carotene, also contains lutein and zeaxanthin and is a rich source of potassium and glucaric acid.

Dried Prunes: Though best known for their laxative properties, prunes are a good source of beta and alpha carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin.

Cherries: This fruit contains the anti cancer bioflavonoid, quercetin. Surprisingly, processed sweet cherries have nearly twice the amount as does fresh. Cherries also contain the monoterpine, periyll alcohol.

Brazil Nuts: Though high in calories and fat, a few of these nuts a day will provide the daily needed amounts of the mineral selenium, as one nut contains between 100 and 125mcg. It is by far the highest source of dietary selenium. They are also rich in protease inhibitors.

Walnuts: A good source of monosaturated fat (like that of avocados and olive oil) walnuts are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and they contain the anti-cancer phytosuperstar, ellagic acid. They are a good source of minerals as well as fiber.

Peanuts: A very good source of protein (though many people are allergic to this food) and resveratrol.

Other foods rich in carotenoids:

* Green beans
* Watercress
* Seaweed
* Mangoes and papayas

Food That You Should Pass....

Nowadays the food we consumed, the air we breath, the water we drink are more polluted that we could ever imagine. With these pollutants entering our body, day and nights, year after year, its just a matter of time before our immune system suffer from breakdown and CANCER strikes.

Cancer is not a disease but rather a sign that our health which used to be a strong fortress held tightly by our immune system has failed. As I was typing this, 2 of my relatives has been diagnosed with cancer of late. One of them is currently in advance stage.

Therefore I felt that there's a urgent need to promote great cancer fighting food and to shun cancer causing food

I'll start by covering food that can cause cancer in the first place:

We can begin identifying cancer-causing foods once we know which ingredients in our food cause cancer. Some of those ingredients are food additives and chemicals used to enhance taste, while others are used strictly for appearance or to increase product shelf life. The key to avoiding cancer-causing foods is knowing which ingredients are carcinogens -- or cancer promoters -- and then reading food labels to permanently avoid consuming those ingredients.

Cancer tumors develop, in part, by feeding on sugar in the bloodstream. If you eat lots of sugary snacks loaded with simple carbs, you're loading your bloodstream with the chemical energy needed for cancer cells (and tumors) to proliferate. No biological system can live without fuel for its chemical processes, including cancer cells. Thus, one of the strategies to pursue for any anti-cancer diet is to eat low-glycemic diet. That means no refined sugars... ever! No refined grains (white flour, for example), no heavy use of sweeteners and the lifetime avoidance of sugary soda pop. Aside from starving tumors, eating foods low in sugar and avoiding simple carbs will also keep your weight in check while helping prevent blood sugar disorders such as type-2 diabetes.

What to avoid on the labels: high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, sucrose, enriched bleached flour, white rice, white pastas, white breads and other "white" foods.

The dangers of hydrogenated oils

Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils -- another danger -- are developed from otherwise harmless, natural elements. To make them hydrogenated, oils are heated in the presence of hydrogen and metal catalysts. This process helps prolong shelf life but simultaneously creates trans fats, which only have to be disclosed on the label if the food contains more than 0.5 grams per serving. To avoid listing trans fats, or to claim "trans fat free" on their label, food manufacturers simply adjust the serving size until the trans fat content falls under 0.5 grams per serving. This is how you get modern food labels with serving sizes that essentially equate to a single bite of food. Not exactly a "serving" of food, is it?

Besides being a cancer factor, trans fats promote heart disease, interrupt metabolic processes, and cause belly fat that crowd the organs and strain the heart. The essential fatty acids that the hydrogenation process removes are responsible for a number of processes in your body. When trans fats replace these essential fatty acids, they occupy the same space without doing the same job. The "anchor" portion of the fatty acid is in place (which is how the body recognizes the fatty acid and puts it to work) but the chemically active part of the fatty acid is twisted, distorted, and missing vital parts.

After the hydrogenation process, the fatty acid can't biochemically function in the same way. Things like brain cell function, hormones, gland function, oxygen transport, cell wall function (keeping things in or out of your cells) and digestive tract operation (putting together nutrients and blocking allergens) are adversely affected.

Food manufacturers don't tell you this on the product label, of course. Your body needs essential fatty acids and you are programmed to keep eating until you get them. If you're only eating trans fats, you'll never feel fully satiated, because your body will never get the fatty acids it needs for essential function. Since cancer needs high blood sugar and low oxygen levels, a person with lots of belly fat who just can't seem to put down those trans fat cookies or crackers (also loaded with flour and simple sugars) presents the ideal environment for the development of cancer.

The acrylamide factor

Since trans fats are often formed during the frying process, we should also talk about acrylamides. Acrylamides are not added into food; they are created during the frying process. When starchy foods are subjected to high heat, acrylamides form. A Swedish study found that acrylamides cause cancer in rats, and more studies are under way to confirm the understanding that acrylamides also cause cancer in humans.

Sodium nitrite (and nitrates)

Food companies add sodium nitrite into certain foods on purpose. This carcinogen is added to processed meats, hot dogs, bacon, and any other meat that needs a reddish color to look "fresh." Decades ago when meats were preserved, it was done with salt. But in the mid 20th century, food manufacturers started using sodium nitrite in commercial preservation. This chemical is responsible for the pinkish color in meat to which consumers have grown accustomed. Although today the use of refrigeration is largely what protects consumers from botulism and bacteria, manufacturers still add sodium nitrite to make the meat look pinkish and fresh.

The nitrites themselves are not the problem. People get more nitrites from vegetables than they do from meat, according to research by the University of Minnesota. During the digestion process, however, sodium nitrite is converted to nitrosamine, and that's where the cancer problems begin. Nitrosamine is a carcinogen, but since it is not technically an ingredient, its presence can be easily overlooked on the packaging. Nitrosamines are also found in food items that are pickled, fried, or smoked; in things such as beer, cheese, fish byproducts, and tobacco smoke.

Knowing about all these ingredients doesn't mean there is simply a "short list" of foods that should be avoided. You have to vigilant and read labels constantly. Here are the five worst offenders:

* Hot dogs: The Cancer Prevention Coalition recommends that children should not eat more than 12 hot dogs per month because of the risk of cancer. If you must have your hot dog fix, look for those without sodium nitrite listed among the ingredients.

* Processed meats and bacon: These meats almost always contain the same sodium nitrite found in hot dogs. You can find some without nitrites, but you'll have to look for them in natural grocers or health food stores. Bacon is also high in saturated fat, which contributes to the risk of cancers, including breast cancer. Limiting your consumption of processed meats and saturated fats also benefits the heart.

* Doughnuts: Doughnuts contain hydrogenated oils, white flour, sugar, and acrylamides. Essentially, they're one of the worst cancer foods you can possibly eat. Reader's Digest calls doughnuts "disastrous" as a breakfast food, and many experts agree it's probably one of the worst ways to start the day.

* French fries: Fries are made with hydrogenated oil and fried at high temperatures. Some chains even add sugar to their fry recipe to make them even more irresistible. Not only do they clog your arteries with saturated fat and trans fat, they also contain acrylamides. They should be called "cancer fries," not French fries.

* Chips / crackers / cookies: These generally contain white flour and sugar as well as trans fats, but it's not enough to simply look for these ingredients on the label; you have to actually "decode" the ingredients list that food manufacturers use to deceive consumers. They do this by hiding ingredients (such as hiding MSG in yeast extract, or by fiddling with serving sizes so they can claim the food is trans fat free, even when it contains trans fats (the new Girl Scout cookies use this trick).

Unbelievable....

Ron Mueck is an Australian hyper-realist sculptor working in the UK. His incredible sculptures of creepy, grotesque, mottled skin and uncannily gigantic proportional figures have adorned the Millennium Dome as well as Charles Saatchi's living room for a number of years now. It would be fair to say, Mueck's one of the leading contemporary artists of today.
His early career was as a model maker and puppeteer for children's television and films, notably the film "Labyrinth" staring Bowie. Mueck moved on to establish his own company in London, making photo-realistic props and animatronics for the advertising industry. This eventually led him to conclude, "photography pretty much destroys the physical presence of the original object", and so he turned to fine art, in particular, sculpture.

Men Sometimes Never Listen...

A man and his wife receive a letter from their daughter who went to study overseas:

My beloved Parents, I miss you so much. I don't know when I'm coming home, but it seems not anytime soon. It breaks my heart to think that by the time I get back you'll be too old. So enclosed you will find a bottle of a potion I have invented. It will make you young, so when I return you'll be the same age as I left you. NOTE: "Please take only one drop"

So they open the envelope and in it there is a bottle with a red potion..
The husband looks at the wife and says: "You go first."

So the wife opens the bottle and takes a drop, there after the husband follows. Indeed they do turn 5 years younger.

A year passes and the daughter returns home to find her mother young and beautiful, carrying a baby on her back.
The mother proceeds to tell her daughter how the potion worked and made her look young.

The daughter is delighted and asks about her father.
"Your father, my child, got so jealous that I was young and beautiful so he drank the whole bottle."
"So where is he?"

"Oh, that's him I have on my back."
